Overview of RV Bike Racks

Out of the $68 billion generated by RV manufacturers and suppliers in 2019, only a small portion of that comes from bike racks. Nevertheless, many RV owners find themselves looking for racks.

Regardless of the size of your RV, you don’t want to be forced to store your bikes inside your camper. There is only so much room in a camper, and bikes are difficult to secure. As you make your way to your destination, the bicycles are likely to be jostled around and become damaged.

This is all based on personal experience. On my first RV trip with my bicycle, I placed two of our bicycles inside the camper. It was propped up against the bed and the wall. By the time I arrived at our campsite, the bikes were slightly damaged and entangled with one another.

A bike rack is a safe way of storing your bicycle, as well as a space-saver. But not all bike racks are created equal. It’s important to understand the differences between bicycle racks and to choose the one that best meets your needs.

If you go online and do a search for an RV bike rack, you’ll come up with more options than you know how to handle. Fortunately, I did all the hard work for you. After testing out several options, I’ve picked the top racks in several categories.

Highlights

If you’re looking for a bike rack that can get you on the road in only a short time, you should take a look at the Swagman RV Ladder Rack. This rack mounts directly on the ladder of your RV.

Because it uses a hook design, the ladder rack requires almost no work for installation. You simply hook it on the top rung, then secure your bikes with the included straps. For added security, you can lock your bikes to the rack and ladder with a bike lock.

This rack holds as many as two bikes, as long as the weight of each bike doesn’t exceed 35 pounds. If you have heavy bikes, this rack may not be able to hold more than one.

When it comes to quality, this product excels. It’s resistant to corrosion, which is a large draw for people like me who travel throughout the humid areas of the country. In the event that something does happen to your ladder rack, you can rely on a limited lifetime warranty.

The Traveler XC2 is one of the more versatile bike racks on the market. Instead of only having one method of hanging this rack, you have multiple options. It also comes with several features that make me wonder why I didn’t try the Traveler XC2 sooner.

Much like the Swagman RV Ladder Rack, this rack has a load capacity of 70 pounds. But you don’t need to give up your ladder to use this rack. Rather, you can install the rack on either on the bumper or on a hitch. The product comes with two different mounting systems, allowing you to choose the most convenient for your RV.

To prevent damage during transport, this rack comes with sliding wheel hoops. It’s not something I’ve seen in many other bike racks, but it’s extremely useful. You slide the wheels through the hoops and don’t need to worry about the bikes being damaged as you drive. With push-button ratchet arms, the rack is also easy to adjust.

As with all Swagman products, this one has the ever-so-convenient lifetime warranty. You can turn to Swagman to repair or replace your product if it stops working.

Although Swagman makes some great bike racks, Camco also deserves some credit. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the design of their ladder mount rack. As an added bonus, this rack is also one of the more affordable ones on the market.

This rack hooks up to the rear ladder of your RV, and the installation is relatively simple. However, Camco does offer an option for you to add expert installation onto your purchase. For those who can’t be bothered with the installation, this is a fantastic option.

Getting the bikes in and out of the rack doesn’t require much effort. When you don’t need to use the rack, it folds up or can be strapped onto your roof as a way to save space.

That said, this rack only carries 60 pounds of weight. If you’re like me and have heavy mountain bikes, the Camco Ladder Mount may not be able to transport two bicycles.

I loved my travel trailer, but I did experience some challenges in finding a bike rack that worked well with the bumper. Fortunately, Quick Products RV Bumper-Mounted 2-Bike Rack saved the day. The design of it makes it ideal for those who have travel trailers.

This rack is made of powder-coated steel, which makes it resistant to rust and corrosion. But the real highlight is the adjust mounting feature. With it, you can lift almost any bike. You don’t need to worry about whether your bike’s model will work with the rack or not.

The installation of this rack is somewhat easy, despite requiring more effort than some of the ladder mounts. More importantly, the hardware is durable and made of quality materials. The company prides itself on customer service, so you can expect a clear answer if you do have any difficulties or questions.

Unfortunately, this is another rack that can only handle 60 pounds. I always double check the weight of my bikes before buying a bike rack for travel trailers

Although this is one of the most expensive RV bike racks, it’s also one of the most innovative. Made by Lippert Components, the Black Jack-It 2-Bike rack isn’t like your typical RV bike rack. Instead, it’s made to install easily onto a trailer with an A-frame.

Unlike most other racks, this one does not secure a bike by its body. It attached to the wheels and prevents the bikes from bumping into each other. Even on a rough road, the bikes are unlikely to experience damage. Adjustable wheel cradles also help minimize the damage and ensure the right fit.

Another unique feature of this rack is the cargo space. Instead of taking up space, this rack gives your more space. There is room on the rack for you to store your cycling gear or other valuables. I love this feature for my gloves and rearview mirror.

With the ability to carry as much as 80 pounds, this rack might be most appealing for those who have heavy bikes. It’s one of the more durable products available, so you can expect this to be the last rack you shop for.

As much as I love this RV bike rack, I don’t love the price tag. You might have a hard time justifying the price tag. But if you’re willing to spend more for quality, a high weight capacity, and stability, then this is a fantastic option.

How To Shop for An RV Bike Rack?

So how exactly do you go about shopping for a bike rack? You can’t just pick one from the list above and hope that it works for your RV. With so many types of RVs on the roads, there is too much variety to find a rack that works with every model.

Before picking a bike rack, you should consider all of the following details:

The Type of Rack

The first question you should ask yourself is regarding the type of rack you want. And this involves knowing your RV well. Will bicycles mounted in the front prevent you from seeing the road? Will a back-mounted rack keep you from towing a vehicle behind your RV?

Bumper-Mounted Racks

If you opt for a bumper-mounted rack, you won’t have any visibility issues in the front. However, you should think twice before using this type of rack on an RV that doesn’t have a steel bumper or a wield that goes across the entire back bumper. On the wrong bumper, this type of rack could cause damage to the RV.

A bumper-mounted rack means that you don’t need to leave your ladder unusable, which keeps your roof inaccessible. While this doesn’t mean much when you’re on the road, it comes into play when you’re parked.

Ladder-Mounted Racks

If you’re not worried about losing roof access for a short time, then a ladder-mounted rack could be the right choice. The rack mounts on the rear ladder of almost any RV and the bikes are vertically attached to the rack. Typically, this type of rack has a lower weight limit than a bumper-mounted rack.

You don’t need to let the inability to climb your ladder sway you from choosing this type of rack. In the past, I’ve just removed the rack when I get to my destination. If you choose a rack that’s easy to install, this won’t be an inconvenience.

Hitch-Mounted Racks

Another less common type of rack is the hitch-mounted rack. RV owners who have hitches on their vehicles can benefit from this rack. Generally, you can choose between two, three, and four bike capacity racks.

When you’re not on your RV, you may also be able to use the rack on your regular vehicle. For instance, you might want to hook your rack up to a pick-up truck. Most racks fit any standard two-inch receiver, which makes this a flexible option.

How-To-Shop-for-An-RV-Bike-Rack

How Frequently You Will Use The Rack

Before making a purchase, consider the frequency at which you will use your bike rack. Do you plan on using it frequently, or only once a year? If you’re like me and enjoy getting out on your bike every time you take a vacation, you should look for a durable bike rack.

One with a lifetime warranty or one made with high quality materials is a better option for those who plan to use their rack frequently. Otherwise, you will find yourself replacing the rack every few years.

Your Bike’s Specs

Finally, consider the specs of your bike. If you’ll be towing multiple bicycles, take the specs of each one into consideration.

For one, determine the weight of each bicycle. You need to choose a rack that can handle the weight and the quantity of bikes that you want to carry. It’s also possible that the size of the wheels may matter. When you buy a rack with wheel straps, you could be limited to its size restrictions.

Final Words

It’s impossible for me to tell you what is the best RV bike rack. However, this guide can assist you with the decision-making process. While it might not seem like a significant decision, your bike rack purchase can affect your camping trip. The wrong rack will make your trip more uncomfortable and inconvenient than necessary. It also may prevent you from toting your bikes with you.

Meanwhile, the right RV bike carrier gives you the ability to tow your bicycles with ease. In fact, you might decide to bring them on every future camping trip. Buy your rack before your next trip and find out how biking can make your RV experience even better.
