Not your Mama’s Mattress Topper

When I initially heard of RV Mattress Toppers I tossed the idea out. I mistakenly thought of those terrible, thin pieces of foam your mom buys for you at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

That’s not what this is. Depending on your budget, RV Mattress Toppers can range from good-enough to downright luxurious, and come in a range of materials. The most popular being memory foam and cotton/poly blend.

After diving into the research we decided to keep our list to memory foam options only. Because we think they are

1.More supportive
2.Longer lasting

The perfect RV mattress topper can turn a crummy RV mattress into a comfortable, relaxing place to sleep. They’re designed with RV’s and their mattresses in mind, and best of all, they are sized accordingly.

RECCI commits to simplicity and quality with their memory foam topper. Their foam is advertised as medium-soft, and does not use heavy metals like mercury, lead, and formaldehyde in its manufacturing. A positive for individuals who are sensitive to harsh chemicals.

The high price tag feels very reasonable considering the quality of the materials used for construction. And the fact that they include a bamboo infused, zip-on mattress protector.

This is the second Zinus topper included on our list. Its foam is CertiPUR-US certified for its durability, performance, and construction. And like the Zinus Swirl Gel, the Zinus Green Tea topper offers a 3 inch profile of high density foam for firm support.

However, this mattress topper devotes an extra inch (for a 4 inch total profile) to a soft layer of green tea extract and castor oil suffused foam.  The extract and oil will help to kill odor-causing bacteria. While the cushy upper layer provides a body-conforming, cozy surface, with all the benefits of the super dense foam underneath.

This 4 inch foam topper is comprised of 2 pieces of foam that are connected together. The bottom 3 inches are made of high density foam to provide support. While the top 1 inch is swirled with gel to provide cool comfort and combat heat absorption. It’s a great mid-range option for those looking to watch their budget and get that firm support.

Milliard offers a lot of benefits. It comes with a zippered bamboo mattress cover for easy cleaning. And underneath a breathable mesh surrounds the memory foam, creating greater air circulation. It’s also the only RV mattress cover on our list that can fold itself into thirds for convenient storage. However, all of these benefits come at a price, and Milliard is one of the more expensive options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Will I Have To Spend?

Not as much as you probably think.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some pricey options if you want to maximize your comfort, and we examine them in our list. There’s also room to stay within a budget and get a good night’s sleep. It’s all about prioritizing what features are important for you. But investing in something extremely cheap isn’t going to provide a lot of comfort and probably won’t last very long.

What Should I Take Into Consideration?

Just like with regular mattress shopping, there’s a lot of options with RV mattress toppers. And it’s important to consider your own personal preferences when deciding what you’ll be resting on.

How do you like to sleep?

Some like it hard and some like it soft. If the seller doesn’t provide options for firmness, reviews are a good place to check to see what other people thought of the topper’s density. You’re buying this to be comfortable so make sure you’ll actually BE comfortable.

What’s their warranty/return policy?

Like we mentioned earlier, it’s not as if you can “try before you buy.” If the first topper you pick isn’t to your liking you need to be able to return it. Or on the opposite end of the spectrum, your new RV mattress topper might have been exactly what you were hoping for, but accidents can happen.

Whether they be in shipping, manufacturing, or you with a glass of red wine (I regret nothing). Make sure you’re aware of the company’s policies for replacement toppers.

Do you need to store it?

Every square inch in your RV is premium and if this topper is for a fold away bed, your choice will need to be able to fold away as well. A lot of memory foam toppers come rolled up and deflated. Once you cut away the plastic they’re shipped in they EXPAND. And there’s no shrinking them back down.

That’s fine if it’s going in your master bedroom and the bed is stationary. But if your bed is meant to tuck away make sure you get an RV mattress topper that has slits in it, so it can fold in on itself.

*A good hack if you need to be able to fold your topper but it’s one solid piece of foam, is to take a box cutter and make the slits yourself. Do be careful (don’t cut yourself), and “draw” a guide with a pencil and measuring tape. If you’re going to do this you need to make sure it’s perfect, because there will be no returning it if you make a mistake.

How Do I Maintain My Memory Foam RV Mattress Topper?

One of the true draw-backs to memory foam mattress toppers is that they can absorb odors over time. And they’re not machine washable like cotton/poly toppers. The machine rips them apart and they’re just too big and bulky to fit anyway.

You can keep your memory foam topper clean in 2 ways:
1.Get a mattress protector. These waterproof sheets are comfortable, affordable, and definitely the easiest option. They’re soft, just like regular sheets, but they stop any liquid or allergens from penetrating the foam. Plus, you can just wash them like regular sheets, so there’s no extra effort.

2.Grab the baking soda and your vacuum; this method is a bit more advanced, but can be used on your actual mattress too!

Baking soda is perfect to use because it’s a natural deodorizer, eliminating any foul body odors in the foam. And it’ll absorb any moisture left over from sweat. Simply, sprinkle a light dusting of baking soda onto your topper and let it sit for a moment. Then vacuum it up, along with any dead skin cells that might be clinging to the surface of the foam.

*If you want to go the extra mile, mix your favorite essential oil into the baking soda to leave a relaxing scent (lavender is perfect for this).

Recommended RECCI Mattress Topper | Final Words

After a lot of research and testing, we came to the conclusion the RECCI Memory Foam Mattress Topper with removable bamboo cover, was our favorite for 2020. We liked the dual certification for quality and longevity of materials. And its included zip-on mattress protector shields your memory foam and makes it easy to keep clean.

REICCI’s price point is a nice middle ground for most budgets, and certainly cheaper than buying a whole new mattress. Its 3 inch profile gives support without being bulky. While the no-slip material keeps your topper on the mattress, so you don’t have to constantly readjust in the morning.

This RV mattress topper checks all our boxes, makes it easy to sleep comfortably. And will last a long time on our RV adventures.
